Staying in Keswick

Lairbeck is ideally located in Keswick.  Known as 'The Heart of the Lake District', Keswick makes an excellent base for anyone wishing to explore the treasures and delights of Lakeland. With breath-taking scenery throughout the year, the Lake District is Britain's foremost National Park and now a World Heritage Site.

The lakes

Standing between Skiddaw and Derwentwater on the River Greta, Keswick is a market town with intriguing narrow streets and Lakeland stone buildings. Dominating its market place is a famous landmark, the Moot Hall, built in 1813.

Keswick hosts several annual events, including an International Jazz Festival, and boasts one of the country's finest theatres, The Theatre by the Lake. In the grounds of Fitz Park stands the Museum, housing original manuscripts by William Wordsworth, Hugh Walpole and Robert Southey.

Not far from Keswick are many attractions such as Rheged Discovery Centre, Castlerigg Stone Circle and the historic houses and gardens of Hilltop, Mirehouse and Dalemain. For golf enthusiasts, Keswick, Cockermouth and Penrith all have fine 18-hole courses. A little farther afield, you can visit Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle Castle, Wordsworth's homes at Rydal and Grasmere, and John Ruskin's home at Brantwood.

Nestling on the shores of Derwentwater, Keswick is conveniently situated for many of Lakeland's best known fells, including Blencathra, Helvellyn, and England's highest peak, Scafell Pike. From Lairbeck itself, the fells of Catbells, Causey Pike, Grisedale Pike and Skiddaw are a splendid sight and it's an easy walk to reach the start of their respective fell paths. Not far from Keswick are the lakes of Thirlmere, Bassenthwaite, Buttermere and Ullswater.

Lairbeck is also an excellent base for attending the Keswick Convention, the Keswick Mountain Festival, Keswick Film Festival and Keswick Beer Festival.
